Academy 1/72 B-17G Flying Fortress Nose Art, Kit Build/Review
The Academy 1/72 B-17G Flying Fortress Nose Art kit is a high value kit due to the comprehensive set of decals that it comes with. The decals in the kit are printed by Cartograf, which is considered to be the best decal manufacturer in the industry by many professional model builders. The extensive decal sheet includes markings for up to six different B-17G aircraft. This sheet also includes a comprehensive set of stencils markings for the fuselage, wings and bombs. As the tiny stencil decals actually have language printed on them, the builder must use a magnifying glass to ensure they are not put on upside down. Although the fuselage interior wall surfaces lack any detail, the kit does include detailed interior parts to make up the cockpit, bombardier's station, and the bomb bay compartment. When installing these parts, constant dry fitting is essential. For painting of the interior of the aircraft, I used Vallejo Model Air 71.010 Interior Green. The decal sheet included seatbelt/harness decals for the pilot and co-pilot seats. Due to the high number of clear plastic parts with intricate framing detail, I used the Eduard Die-Cut Flexible Mask set CX014 for the Academy B-17F/G 1/72 kit. Application of these tiny masks was time consuming and tedious, but necessary for a quality build. For my build, I selected version 4, Nine O Nine, B-17G-BO (42-31909), 323BS/91BG. This paint scheme was Olive Drab/Blue Grey Pale with red areas on the wings and vertical tail plane. For the upper surfaces of this aircraft, I used Vallejo Model Air US Olive Drab 71.043 and Folk Art 4133E Lipstick Red. For the under surfaces of this aircraft, I used Vallejo 70.905 Blue Grey Pale. In order to add visual interest to the model, I posed the bomb bay doors in the open position to show the detailed internal bomb bay with its 8 painted and decaled bombs. A major issue with this kit is the overly exaggerated dihedral angle at the main wing roots. To minimize this issue, I attached the main wings to the fuselage flush with the lower edge of the wing root. This created a wide gap along the upper wing root and the main wing parts. This required multiple applications of Micro Krystal Clear as a filler material. Once this material had cured, I topped off the shallow gap with Mr. Hobby 1500 Leveling Thinner. I ended up with an unsightly joint, however the toy like exaggerated dihedral was greatly reduced to an acceptable amount. All paints on the model were applied using an Iwata HP-C airbrush with a 0.3 mm needle at 20 PSI. After painting the model with acrylic paints, I sealed the surface with Future Floor Polish. Once the Future was dry, I applied a water-resistant matte acrylic coat from a spray can. This process allows me to apply the decals. Decal application was tedious and time consuming due to the high number of stencil markings included on the decal sheet for this kit. However, at the end of this process I felt it was worth the effort. Decal installation was followed up with another coat of future to protect the decals. Once this protective coat was dry, a final coat of matte acrylic from the spray can concluded the decal/paint application process. The next process applied to this build was using Tamiya Brown Panel Liner to accent the recessed panel lines on the model and also to provide a filter over the painted surfaces of the aircraft. Excess Tamiya Panel Liner was removed using Testors Enamel Thinner. The last step involved weathering the model using Tamiya Weathering powder. I used the soot color to create the engine exhaust stains behind the engine cowlings and over the wing surfaces behind the engines on the aircraft. I was happy with the results using this product. This model required a great deal of patience for me to obtain a somewhat acceptable result. In the end however I felt somewhat drained, but happy to have completed this build. Due to the lengthy and tedious build process necessary to successfully complete this model, I would recommend it for intermediate to advanced model builders with plenty of patience and high levels of manual dexterity as you have to be mindful not to break off the numerous machine gun barrels protruding out from various locations on this model.
