Reviews : Academy F3F-2 VF-6 Fighting Six

Arguably the best F3F-2 in any scale. This is another Accurate Miniatures mold saved from oblivion by Academy. The cockpit is the best I've seen in this scale and the most accurate in any scale kit of this plane. This kit was originally made in the early 90's and I would not be surprised if they based the model off of the Herb Tischler flying replicas being built at the time. The upper wing is the correct length for the -2 version as is the smooth cowl. The cabane struts are molded as part of the upper fuselage making it easier to assemble and align the upper wing. The landing gear is rather delicate looking but holds the weight of the model easily. I hope that Academy will issue this kit with parts to make Major Al Williams Gulfhawk II. This is the beautiful bright orange F3F-2 that now hangs on display in the Smithsonian. It was modified with the shorter upper wing from a F3F-1 and a more powerful engine which necessitated the use of the classic cowl bumps for clearance.

This was my first Academy aircraft build and it was a fantastic kit. I want to expand to a couple different ones now. Everything fit together like a charm and virtually no flash to deal with. The window mask were a great addition along with the PE pieces, although I have to say I’m not a big fan of using the photo etch parts. I’m sure that’s just me however. Would definitely build another in a different paint scheme.

Wow…what a beautiful model. Parts click together just like Tamyia. Molded very nice. Decals are beautiful but a little thin. I was very impressed. I’m working on Academies “ Black Cat” “ Catalina right now and it’s totally awesome. Just the same …beautiful engineering. Totally recommend Academy models.
