Standard Academy
First of all, the picture on this page is wrong. That's clearly an F-16, not a Warhawk. I had already built a version of this kit -- Academy's P-40E with RAAF markings -- and was pleased to find the same basic sprues in this box. The P-40M's longer fuselage is included, along with the pieces to make the cut-down section behind the cockpit that two of this kit's versions call for. The level of detail is quite high for a 1/72 kit, including an instrument panel, wheel wells, exhausts, and so on. Despite all the small parts and detail everything fits together very well, as if it was a snap-tite kit rather than a finely-molded model. The only problems with this kit -- as with other Academy aeroplanes -- comes at the very end, with the decals. They are rather thick and difficult to work with. I chose the 112 Squadron RAF option, and had a tough time getting the sharkmouth to fit snugly around the aircraft's chin. It didn't seem to want to go on in the correct position indicated by the instructions. Part of this might be simple carelessness on my part, of course, but it's a consistent problem with Academy decals that I haven't faced with other makers. In conclusion it's a well-made kit, and produces a very solid and satisfying P-40.
