Reviews : AMT 1940 Willys Pickup Coke

I wasn’t really looking to build a Willys pick up gasser. Unlike the coupes, it was uncommon to see a gasser pick up. Be that as it may, the kit was a blast to build. I loved the period correct supercharged Olds engine paired with a B&M Hydromatic and Halibrand rear axle. The Olds would have been a common choice before racers discovered the Chrysler hemi. The wheels and tires are also well done. The Coca Cola decals are nicely printed but not authentic enough for my tastes. I ran into the issue with the seats and roll bar and found that widening the roll bar by about 1 quarter inch solved that. If you do not have any scratch building materials this can be done using a bit of sprue. The only other issue I had was the fit of the nose. I fabricated a new raised hinge using some styrene tube and piano wire. This allowed the nose to fit and close properly. Raising the hinge caused the bug catcher scoop to no longer protrude thought the hood in proper gasser style. This was remedied using a bit of .125 inch square stock. Lately, I’ve been using E6000 for gluing together painted parts. It is REALLY tacky and dries clear. The only downside is that it can be messy, so watch out for spider lines and use it sparingly.

I just started this cool kit and found that it will be a real winner on any dragstrip. Im building the engine block now and painting it Gloss Red with the Chrome parts is really standing out. I'm going to detail it with ignition wiring made from thin electric wire and using the insulation as the wires. That will really add to the detail. Next I'll paint the model using the box art as a guide. I have five of the 1/25th scale vehicle kits built and relived my teen days from the 60s enjoying every minute of the experience. I'm seeing that there are no real issues with this kit and that's important to anyone. I highly recommend this kit to novice and experienced builders alike.

This kit will make a cool Willys Gasser! You will have some challenges. The main one is the interior, I totally agree with jonboy’s review. The seats need retooling, they are too big/wrong! If you want to use the roll bar you will have to scrap seats from another kit. Otherwise this is a very nice kit, good detail on the engine, the fenderwell headers are great!! The Red Line slicks are a super nice addition to this gasser..

Can't go wrong with a true classic. Build was carefree, but the hood was a little finicky. If you want to build it as a gasser truck like I did you have to cut the rear fenders off. Just follow the instructions, go slow and sand as needed to your liking. I built mine box stock except I added a bigger blower from another kit. Pros: I can say I made this!. Cons: Now I have to build the coupe version!

Nice looking little gasser! The only problem is the front seats don't fit! It is A CARBON COPY OF CURLEYS GASSER, and they didn't re-tool the front seats to be just a little smaller. My only complaint.
