Not for novices
This kit has great possibilities - for experienced builders - NOT for 1st timers or novices. Other than having no chrome parts, it has typical AMT semi-truck kit quality, lots of flash, miserable or bare minimum instructions, part numbers shown on the box bottom, awkwardly requiring both instruction sheet and bottom of box to be referenced. Occasionally parts only having arrows that point to a general place on the corresponding assembly, and unmarked where it is to be glued. It would have been nice if AMT would have given the model of Kenworth chassis or base model number. This kit is a combination of hood-fender versions and transmission options, so choice of parts and/or modification of part has to be studied and pre-assembled to insure the desired result is achieved. Alignment of cab, sleeper, hood, front fenders and radiator is difficult, but critical for proper appearance. The small exterior cab features such as door handles, clearance lights, horns, mirrors, emblems and filter canisters are quite the challenge. Lots of macho options like the headache rack, moose catcher and diamond plate fenders make this a unique truck. Even experienced modelers will be challenged, but when completed will have a truck to be proud of!
White Palette
I read a few reviews and build threads on this kit before deciding on purchase. For some reason, it never really appealed to me until I started diving into old logging trucks that were all over the PacWest in my youth. Then it caught me. I plan to modify it heavily in the style of the Pacific P16 loggers from the '70s and I thick for that, it will be a great starting point. Kenworth W924, C500, C520, and 953 series trucks are great inspiration.
If you like a challenge
This kit is definately NOT for beginners.. First the challenging parts, no numbers on the trees, only on the bottom of the box.. NO chrome, everything must be painted, considering the subject matter that might be a good thing, this thing represents a workhorse with NO fancy trim... Now for the positive, even for a beginners with a little help this will build up into a realistic work horse for your collection...
Great kit!
I have always wanted to build this kit in a dirty wet snowy environment. I paired it with the peerless log trailer. Very fun build. I had to shim the truck chassis slightly to get the trailer parts to fit. Also some difficult mounting the fender mounts and the hood
Challenging but fun.
This is a tough kit, but not a kit that will frustrate you. It's a straightforward but solid build with a lot of custom options. Fun build for an experienced builder. Not a good first kit.
