The new standard in couplers
I have just gotten back into the hobby as an adult and find the Kadee whisker couplers to be the new standard of coupler performance. Kadee #5's apparently were the standard for some time but this assembly is more simple and does not have the somewhat dainty brass colored centering device.
There are versions available in over and underset shanks as well.

I use the Kadee 148s as my standard couplers now as they are durable and they do a great job keeping my train cars together. I recently upgraded all of my old Horn Hook train cars to the 148s and haven't looked back.

After using Kadee you will never want to use standard cheap couplers again!
Kadee can be uncoupled without touching them by using magnets. They also look much more realistic.

I have upgraded all of my rolling stock to Kadee # 148 couplers. In my opinion they are the gold standard.
