Reviews : MPC 1967 Pontiac GTO

This is an interesting kit to say the least. When I say interesting, I don't mean the subject matter as much as I mean the way the kit itself is manufactured. I am advised from other articles that I have read online that this was originally released as an annual kit back in the late 60's... I believe it as the kit does indeed seem to be a mixture of old and new parts. Specifically the body, chassis, and interior seem to be recently manufactured in China with fresh tooling... the mold is crisp and no flash. Interesting due to the fact that I had read in another online review that the body also had lots of flash when first released, which if this is true means it went through a revision during the latest production run. However it is also readily apparent that this mold was originally intended to be used for a die-cast body and chassis as the supports for the screws are still molded in. On the other hand, the sprues with all the other parts are pretty obviously old tooling that hasn't stood up very well over the years. Tremendous amounts of flash, details that look iffy and washed out in spots, and a fair amount of molding artifacts are present. Overall I feel that this kit should build into a relatively decent curbside kit, but to get anything more out of it is going to require a fair amount of effort. Definitely not a beginner's kit in my opinion.

This kit leaves a lot to be desired. This was my first MPC kit. The body detail was clean and impressive but the rest of the kit. Crap! The chrome tree's were horrible. It was like there was a double dose of chrome on the parts. so thick it distorted the detail and you couldn't hardly read the numbers to match on the instructions. Tons of flash on all parts. The engine looked lost in the huge engine bay. No details. The radiator was a separate part but was like 116 thick. Like a piece of paper. Make sure you pre fit the rear tail lights. They would not fit at all. I almost ruined my paint job trying to get them in. Eventually just flipped them around and used the flat part of the red transparent lights. I do not like to give bad reviews, but this kit was not very good.

A 1967 GTO is a beautiful thing and the body on this MPC offering does it justice. It is beautifully molded with crisp, if delicate, engraving for the emblems. Flash, mold lines, and sink marks are virtually non-existent, but for accuracy under the hood, the radiator support, with its prominent screw retaining holes will need to be replaced. The bumpers are nicely molded, but the front grill/bumper fits poorly. This can be remedied by cutting loose the painted portion of the grill from the body, filing notches in its ends to raise it up, and gluing it back in place. The interior pieces are good enough to use without major amounts of work, however, unless you enjoy reworking poorly molded, poorly fitting parts, the remaining pieces are better relegated to the parts box.

Okay, good things first. The subject of this kit is kind of rare, so that's a plus. The exterior look of the model is really beautiful and looks great with all the right proportions. The interior looks nice and careful painting can render really excellent results. The price is really good, and you will have some parts left. Okay...the bad news. The engine is okay, but the engine well is just bare. The fit is wonky, some aggravating flash and yes, the kit really is showing its age. If you want to practice on scrathbuilding, this would be an excellent and affordable kit to start with. I'm only recommending because of the price.

Back in the mid 60's MPC made some good models. That was then, I received this for a Christmas gift, and is the second time I have built it. The first one I tossed it when completed. Cons:the front grill/headlight piece had a zero chance to fit with large gaps. The interior console part was missing, so there's no place to mount gear shift or detail. Seats are very thin and not alike. Engine assembled like directions and installed correct. The blower sits too high to close high-rise hood. Multiple molding dents in car body, mostly in hood. Lacking in detailing. Pros: N/A

I totally agree with some reviews I read. From the time I opened the box till I finally called it done, it was nothing but problems, They need retool this if they are going keep selling it. The minute I seen the chrome and major gobb's of flash over everything should of known. The body itself had numerous dimples in it and looked like plastic was burned in mold brownish colorization etc. etc. I should of thrown half in garbage and saved some parts but engine even had issues. Its now on a shelf to be forgotten about.

Lots of flash and requires a lot of pre-fit. Not for a beginner, its clear to see its an old casting, and made in China doesn't help. Get out the masking tape and Sharpie to look for the high spots. And new blade on the exacto knife. Its got a good body and like that it can be built stock or custom. Wish the hood tach was on the stock hood. I'd build it again. If you are into Pontiac, old muscle cars... build it thanks Dennis

I would agree with all that was said in the previous reviews, the body in this kit is average and the only real usable part! I began to build it and quickly realized NO GO! I couldn't believe how poor this offering was so I came up with the idea of using the GTO body on a AMT 1967 Chevelle pro street chassis. I had one that had previous damage from falling off the shelf. so find a good donor chassis and then you'll have something!

This Kit was a HUGE disappointment! While the Body was cast nicely Everything...and I mean EVERYTHING else was a complete mess!! Does MPC not have QC? the flashing in this kit was horrid, and NOTHING fit correctly! So have a hobby knife, and putty ready! The grill doesnt even fit the body. Its like they took 3 different GTO kits, and said hey just put them all together, and sell it! IT IS NO WAY SHAPE OR FORM A BEGINNERS!

I did not like this kit. a lot of problems already detailed by others but lucky for me, I painted it Tamiya Silver Leaf with black interior, and it looks great sitting on my office shelf, if you don't look at the engine bay and you don't look too close at the front bumper / grill that gave me all kinds of trouble, until I finally just glued it on as best I can. Not likely to buy another MPC again.

This kit had a lots, lots of flash to trim. Also the rear bumper was unusable- the bumper was only half molded. The exhaust pipes hung too low, I guess I could have used a heat gun to fix it but, I don't have one. The things good I can say are: the body is near perfect and the hood fit well. Unless you are very patient and can make parts yourself ( bumper) I would steer clear of MPC models.

If your just into building skip this one. It takes a lot of work. The back lights don't fit and the flash is unbelievable. Engine is too small for the engine bay and there's a big gap between the front headlights and to where the radiator goes. Major fitment issues too. It does come with additional parts for 2 different engines and 2 sets of wheels.

Not very happy with this kit. I usually don't mind working through some minor issues with flash and/or fit but this one just was one problem after another. The body was the best part of the kit,everything else needed trimming, sanding or cutting. I fought my way through and got a decent display piece but was more work than I care to put into a basic kit.

Getting back into this after 40 years. I always liked this year so I bought one to duplicate what my older cousin had . After sanding, painting and assembling the engine I discovered no front bumper. I had to go back and purchase ANOTHER of same. Other than the exhaust ends pointing downward the car looks pretty good for a first attempt

This can be a good build if you take your time as the tree parts have a lot of flash so you will need to do clean up on almost all of these. Body is good. If you take your time and do a nice job on the detailing you will end up with a nice finished product and it was a fun build as long as you don't mind putting some work into it.

If you are looking for a fairly good cheap model to build and you have extra parts you can build a great car. with plenty of engine room you can put a bigger engine with headers or whatever else you want to use.the body was great but the other parts needed a lot of trimming and TLC otherwise its a fairly decent model

just finished this one and i have to say some of the design flows are the look of the radiator support and the fact that the battery doesnt fit on to it it is supposed to mount on the inner finder and that doesnt look right but other than that its a cool car to have in my collection

I needed a GTO model and got one. This one, however, was poorly molded. I still got it together and think it's pretty nice. But it was kind of clunky molding with okay instructions. Some of the pieces didn't fit quite right either. It was still fun to put together though.

This is, without doubt, the worst model kit I have ever purchased. The dies used for all of the components are washed out and, most likely, circa 1960. The body cast is from a newer die. The engine parts (even the engine block!) fit together poorly. I would not recommend this kit.

If you are willing to put a hundred hours to get parts to fit right, this is the kit for you, but if you are wanting to have a quick weekend build, it won't happen with this kit. Every tree has flash on it, and it is poor fitting. The body is the only good part of this kit.

Was anxious to do this model because the '67 GTO is one of my favorites but was disappointed by low part quality (poor moldings), part identification numbers that were difficult to read, and a lack of detail with the individual parts. Can anyone suggest a better GTO model?

There was excessive flash on edges of body, and parts. Also two sink marks in trunk area. After making repairs and painting, found out the chassis stuck out 3/8 beyond back of body. Had to saw off half inch to fix. This is the worst I've ever seen Will not buy MPC again

Nice build, not a lot of excess molding fit together nicely some twisted parts, good detail on the interior, exhaust and suspension. Choice of engines, hoods and wheels.I like the 2 in 1 builds always have extra parts for the spare parts box.

This kit comes blown & injected with chrome headers & a giant SCOOP or you can build stock 4 barrel 389 I am doing the conservative like your Dad or Granddad might have driven Brown with a black top chrome on black & black on chrome. NIZZZZZZA

The engine detail was lacking, no heater hoses, (not plastic ones, like most models) no master cylinder etc, when finished there was way too much space in the engine compartment because it was lacking in the parts, other than that a good model

All in all, a great build. The parts fit together nicely, and I liked the customization options. However, I think they should have included slicks in the kit. You can jack up the rear for slicks, however none were included in the kit.

Absolutely the worst kit I've bought. EVERYTHING had tons if flash and the chassis was warped.I saved some parts for the parts box but didn't even try building it. Will use the body as a test body for painting.

I love the body style but... Decals are limited Battery does not go in well Front grill is a pain a LOT of flashing Instructions are... ok... No radiator hoses, front shroud and radiator is lackluster

I have a lot of time invested in this model, sand paper, files and even a lighter to warm up and mold some parts. In the end I have a nice GTO. Expect to put a lot of time and patients into this one.

Hard to assemble. Lot of excess flashing to trim and file to fit. Engine looks to be smaller scale. Front bumper was a real problem. If you take your time (lots of time), you can make it look good.

Just received this model. sticker on box said original 1967 tooling used. must have been well taken care of because everything looks , well, crisp. can't wait to start on this one.

I now have the 1964 GTO,The 1965,The 1966,and The 1967 GTO Models in my collection. I may keep addong others till I have all GTO Models.That may take me some time to complete.

Not the best kit in the world. Very limited details, and the suspension was very cheesy. Was fun to build but just wasn't challenging enough for me as far as detail.

Had lots of issues with this one frame was warped flash was ridiculous and parts fitment was let's not talk about I'd stay away from this kit

This kit has been over produced. the flash on the parts is everywhere. The kit fits together terribly. I'd love if it was retooled.

It's got a lot of different ways to build it. Two set of wheels, hoods, and engine set ups. Great model to build.

Always loved the G T O ‘s I did this kit in a Neon Orange, and I think it turned out GREAT !!!

Kit is showing its age with fitment issues. Nothing a little time and patience can’t fix.
