A Dioroma Kit
By: snod
I built this kit in 1983 while in the service. I built it in German gray with the gun on its bogies, and I still have it. I wanted to rebuild it again in the firing position. But I did not want to just throw out all the other extras. I purchased a display case (TSM9808) & sandbags (TAM35025) along with the kit. Got some grass at my locale hobby shop and went to work. I wanted an eastern front look. So, I went with dark yellow color for the gun & bogies. Painted all the figures & Zundapp motorcycle in German gray. I placed the gun and its crew behind the sandbags in the firing position. The diorama turned out great. PRO's: No problems with any of the pieces going together. Decals went on smooth. You get African corps and European theater. Nine figures. Rubber tires on the bogies. A lot of extra pieces are included. Such as, 88mm shell's, ammo shell cases, fired shells, rifles, bainites etc. You can build the gun as an anti-aircraft or anti-tank gun. CON'S: None except, not more kits like this one. Not for beginners. So, us your imagination and have fun.
88 Rifle
This is a wonderful model. It is not for a beginner. I am 68 and this was my return to modeling after 40 years. I should have waited. I first cut off a glue peg, filled glue holes and broke small parts. I can almost breathe as I paint this weapon and I have most of my fingers left. It is complicated and has several parts that move after assembly. Read the instructions, inspect the sealed plastic sprues. There are two small brass nuts and two small screws. I managed to assemble without these, not a good idea. In ending, I recommend this product. It is challenging and rewarding. Even though my attempt is not good, I am happy. I learned and improved my skills and have assembled tools. Thank you Hobbylinc I definitely recommend this for an experienced modeler
An oldie but goodie and continues to be a bargain
I am a shameless shill for this kit. I have built 4-5 over the years and can't resist it. The gun itself is beautiful, the model is excellently executed (particularly for a 40-year-old mold) TONS of detailed parts, including some parts for the separate FLAK and PAK versions (parts which you'll want to keep in your extra parts box for other customizations) AND, a huge bonus is the nine men and BMW motorcycle. The eight-man crew is a Tamiya figures kit in itself, as is the motorcycle and rider. Those would be about $6 and $4 as separate kits, so you're getting a magnificent artillery piece for a real bargain. I don't see any downside to this kit, Tamiya should be proud and I wish Tamiya would add those kinds of extras to all their models.
88 flak German ww2
at 1st a little intimidated by the 2 variances of the build but I just crossed out what I did not want.and went to town.the model comes with a large crew,8 working and a motor cycle driver.nice poses and lots of extras.this is a must buy.the bmw cycle was included as were shells spent and ready to .It is the center of my diorama.i have 3 total much fun to build and place.I painted all 3 differently. For 26.00 can't go wrong.Older kit but Tamiya does it again.thinking of towing one with my 18 ton semi track.did one in German grey, the other in dark yellow and the other in camo. made them all in the stationary position.
This kit is not for a beginner, but for everyone else!
Plenty has been said about this 51-year-old kit. The only thing I can add is that it has a LOT of tiny parts that would challenge anyone, but the payoff is so worth it. The kit is just beautiful. I built it so that everything that can move - does – even the breach block and leveling feet. The figures are awesome, but difficult to make into Luftwaffe personnel. The Zundapp is a wonderful addition. I am really glad that I built this kit, but warning – it is not an overnight build. Cleaning, prepping and painting all the figures alone took me about a week. It was worth it and I’m proud of the outcome!
Awesome kit for the $!
This is a GREAT kit for the money. The weapon and it's wheel assemblies are really well done, even though they are an extremely old Tamiya product. All of the figure poses are fantastic, but expect some thickness in some details as seen in all of the older Tamiya kits. My favorite features are how the weapon piston assemblies move as the main gun elevates, the hinged gunner's port window, and that the cannon can be modelled in the 'recoiling' position if you want to make it firing in your diorama. You get a LOT in this box, you won't be disappointed at under $30.
Better of the two
Tamiya sells this artillery piece in two different kits . One is featured with the military vehicles and this one with the dioramas. This kit is way cooler . You can build this either as a 36 or a 37 and fixed or mobile . I built mine on the transport bogies in a firing position ( the other kit doesn't have the bogies nor does it have the motorcycle and rider ) . This kit also includes 8 guys and tons of accessories . All in all this was a very challenging model that went together well . And the best part is it's cheaper than the other kit. This kit is a must have.
I have to agree with the other reviews
First built this in my school days and have now built two in my late sixties. One is painted for western front and the one reviewed and with pix is north africa. You can't beat this for the price. As mentioned by others nine figures, motorcycle and extra parts. One of Tamiyas better molds. Had no problems with either kit, everything fit where it was supposed to. Will probably order more in the future as I seem to be collecting enough models to build my own army. Would recommend this to anyone looking for a detailed field piece.
TTamiya kit#53017
I first purchased this kit in 1973 for 10.00.It was my first Tamiya kit and got me hooked on Tamiya models. The detail is superb as well as the many moving features.I almost expected it to fire. The model is well made and assembly is easy(as is the case with the majority of Tamiya models. The kit contains parts for building either version of the gun and decals to match.I am not planning on building this model immediately. This review is based on past experiences with this kit.In short this is a must own kit for any collector.
First kit since my youth
This was the first model I assembled since my youth (as in decades ago) and this was a kit I remembered when I was in high school. I made a diorama at that time and recall this kit, and the motorcycle kit that came with it. I have completed this as an anti-aircraft version and plan on using it in a future diorama with a few more pieces around an airfield. Can't wait to weather this as I have only begun to learn that process and am excited to take my modeling to the next level of detail.
Surprise Find Much Liked
Okay this was a surprise find and not what I was imagining. Yes there is another version from Tamiya that is Afrika Korps based but with this one I was actually inspired to create a diorama, check out my pictures. The additional motorcycle + rider demanded the idea of a road edge next to the Gun placed somewhere and I am glad I did. Now I chose model kits that are not just to place on a shelf but to put into some sort of scene. Thanks Tamiya I have advanced modelling skills beyond just paint.
patience required
this is a great, super detailed kit. there are many, many teeny tiny parts, forcing me to use the tweezers more on this kit than on any other I have built. definitely not for beginners. but with patience and a few do overs it came out pretty good. I built mine in the transport configuration. by the way it comes with a motorcycle that comes out nice, again with patience. took a little over 2 weeks to complete. more than worth your time. would recommend to all.
Great, not to difficult
Great kit! I love the diversity of building different things, and I love that there is so much to build and paint! The directions are a little lacking but not to bad. There are a few very small parts that are easy to break so not really for a young beginner but it’s not overly difficult either. All parts went together pretty well without to much sanding. Definitely worth the money! Very fun build and great look! Great quality!
Great detail
Typical of Tamiya, this product has superior detail. The instructions are clear and the build smooth with everything fitting together perfectly and no appreciable clean up required. The result, is a great build that produces a very realistic result. A great addition to any collection of WWII armor. A great pairing for this kit would be the sdk7 Semitrack which was used to tow this iconic weapon, transport it's crew.
Awesome!!!
Everything looks great. All the pieces are clean. Very detailed instructions and I like the fact they've modified it and sent the modified instructions with it. Plus it's two guns in one and you can decide which one. Gotta love that. Love this company and will buy more. Can't say enough about it. Will look great in my diaroma. Must have!!!
It's ok
My flak gun came out of the box mis-shaped. I built with the con-gears attached, and hooked to a half track. I liked the fact it came with men and a motor cycle. I'll have to get another one and see if I have the same problem. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. It was, still, a fun build.
Tamiya Kit # 35017
Likes:Very little mold flash, minimum trim/sand before gluing parts.Highly detailed model once assembled. Makes a great stand-alone model or placement in a diorama. Dislikes:NONE. Backdrop and enclosed glass display adds to and protects your work. They are worth the expense. See my photo - Tennessee Reb
Very fun and easy build for a diorama
Honestly a very simple build, did not have trouble building it and jamming to music, although the one thing I'll say is that it's kinda plan just by itself. It's one of those models that are an amazing addition to the German half-track or a mounted fortification diorama.
Fantastic
This is a very challenging model to put together but is very worth it in the end. It is super realistic and can be made as an anti-tank, or anti-aircraft variant. Comes with many troops, and a highly detailed motorcycle. All this for a very affordable and low price
Great kit for the money
I ordered this kit a few weeks ago and finally had a chance to really look it over. I was surprised at the detail. No issues with misshaped or missing parts. Kit is now 50% complete. One nice feature is the support team/figures.
Great kit!
Although this kit has been around for years it is still a very good one. No flash on any parts and a good selection of extras. Combined with an 8 ton half track kit you can have an impressive diorama subject.
Fun kit!
This kit is perfect for a diorama! The beginners will have little to no trouble building it! It comes with a great number of figures and accessories. I highly recommend for all model builders.
German 88mm flak gum
This kit went together well with very little flash. Very detailed kit with excellent fit of parts. I highly recommend this kit for anyone. Very nice addition to my collection.
88mm Gun
very nice model, enjoyed working on it. the parts fit well and the figures were perfect for the 88mm gun. built it and placed it on a wooden platform.
German 88 flak gun
I found this to be a very nice kit, especially for the money and considering it has numerous figures. The detail is good and it was a enjoyable build.
mike (il)
a very good model. was fun to build. this model has a lot of great paints about it, very litte flash very good details,
Excellent product
I liked it so much I bought it twice. One for Afrika Corps and one for AA defense diorama. Good details and good fit.
Can't wait to finish it
As usual a quality Tamiya kit. I love the history behind the 88mm flak gun.
