Reviews : Trumpeter Soviet KV2 Tank

Donning the large, three person turret, the Russian KV2 heavy tank must have looked quite intimidating to the Germans who first encountered them. Reliability issues hampered the otherwise impressive tank, and the same can be said of the kit sold by Trumpeter. Mild flash is widespread throughout the model. Trimming and sanding slows what would otherwise be a fairly quick build. The turret and base of the model are completed tubs, and panels are glued to the base to give details and further anchor points. Several drill holes are part of these panels. You have the option of track, either a rubber band style, which I prefer, or a link and length alternative which I did not explore. The kit comes with a brass wire to make tow cables. These do not really compliment the tank, but it is a nice try. Braided thread may work better. The upside of the model is its reasonable price and overall straightforward build. I had no insurmountable frustrations with the fit of pieces. Unlike some other more pricey tank kits, the design of how the cannon fits to the turret is solid. Another bonus on the turret is an operational hinged rear door, though the interior is undeveloped. The lack of a Soviet soldier is a pity, as the size of this tank can otherwise be hard to fathom. It is a large tank. Because of the flash and lack of figure, I rate this an overall 4/5 star product.

Alright there needs to be some explanation of the review title. The model overall when done rates a three but the lousy fit and amount of flash and seam work takes away from the fun of building this kit. The lack of detail for its size and every other piece needing to be trimmed or sanded accounts for the low rating. Spent more time preparing the pieces than actually putting them together. Had the same kind of problems on an earlier Trumpeter kit. Will shy away from this brand unless I come across a really interesting kit and then talk myself into getting it. They say the third times a charm, will wait and see.

When I opened the box for this kit I was very surprised how huge it was! The packaging was perfect, and a parts protected. Assemble is very straightforward similar to the KV1 series and Trumpeter has gone to great lengths to make excellent kits. Fit of all parts is perfect, miminal flash, and the detail of welds and bolts is super. The only problem was the missing holes for the tow cable holders on the hull. It would be nice to have some PE parts for the grills and fender storage boxes. But overall this a very good kit, highly recommend to buy and enjoy.

All and all a nice model, for the price this is really a winner. However it is not a 5 start model there is a lack of details and a lot of flash and mould marks to fix. A solid four stars though I had alot of fun putting it together and painting it up. I did add a couple of photo etched part kits and did attempt a set of individual track links ( melted with an overly hot solvent when weathering oops) it does however have link and length as well as rubber band so you will be covered. I would whole heatedly recommend this to anyone interested in the tank.

the kv2 was an awesome build. lots of detail. you get to actually build the entire thing including the complete lower suspension. very easy to assemble as well. also comes with both the flexible tracks and the link together tracks as well making this kit even better. i recommend this kit to everyone. great build

A cool simple and easy kit , a good weekend project . Love the look of the tank ( almost steam punk looking). I am not sure if the kit just did natot have any details besides the basic body , and hull. Or maybe the soviets just sent them out with as little gear as possible?

Great build. I personally didn't put the small parts on because I couldn't handle them. But, I did do a great job on my first model tank. love it, recommend to all.

Best kv tank...I thought this tank discontinued... I'm very happy to have this nice model If you plan to build tank model...Try this first!!!

The box was a bit scuffed when It arrived, But the product was as shown...Very fun to build and a nice end result

great tank to work on lots of parts. small detail parts can get lost easy.
